A three dimensional mathematical model for a single unit cell of a direct methanol fuel cell

A three dimensional, isothermal, single phase, multi-component, mathematical model is developed for a liquid-feed direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) to investigate the influence of key parameters on methanol crossover and fuel cell performance. The continuity, momentum, and species conservation equations are coupled with electrochemical kinetics in both the anode and cathode catalyst layers. This model considers the effects of methanol crossover due to both diffusion and electro-osmotic drag from anode to cathode. Modeling results show that temperature, pressure, methanol inlet concentration and flow rate, GDL and membrane thicknesses and GDL porosity, influence the cell performance. Results also show that 30% of methanol pass through the membrane at low current densities
