Abstract This research is concerned about numerical simulation of hydrogen detonation in unconfined spaces. Therefore, the governing equations of detonation  which is a coupled motion of shock and combustion waves, (continuity, momentum, energy, species transport, compressibility and chemical reaction model) has been solved simultaneously. The aims of this study are divided into two parts: a) investigation and comparison of diffusion terms against convection and b) consideration the effects of reaction kinetic and heat combustion on detonation propagation. Results of this study show that single step reaction rate and inviscid flow assumptions, predict detonation into deflagration transition (safety time) with about 30% error. Since to determine detonation parameters as well as required time to transit detonation into deflagration which is a safety factor in industrial facilities, full equations of flow and multi-steps reaction rate model must be used.
