Energy analyses and optimization of OTEC plant in the Caspian sea

Abstract: Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) uses the temperature difference between the warm surface seawater and cold seawater of the ocean; this temperature difference is then implemented in a thermodynamic engine cycle (Rankine cycle) to generate electricity. Since the temperature difference between the surface and approximately 150m depth is more than 20 C in 5-6 months of the year, it is estimated that the southern coast of the Caspian Sea is ideal for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC). In this study, the effect of condensation temperature and evaporation temperature were evaluated for Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) working in an OTEC power plant. The performance of the ORC system was appraised by the object parameter called specific power defined as the ratio of the net power to total heat transferred area of the heat exchangers. The optimal condensation and evaporation temperatures were achieved for the maximum specific power
